GUIDELINES

  • Please submit only one short story at a time and wait for a response before sending another. Simultaneous submissions to other magazines accepted. Please withdraw promptly if story is accepted elsewhere.
  • Due to increasing submissions and a limited volunteer reading staff, we cannot guarantee a specific response time window. If you’d like to check on the status of your story, log into your Submittable account for updates.
  • We accept submissions from anywhere in the world, but stories must be in English.
  • No genre fiction (thriller, horror, romance, etc.); literary fiction only. Novel excerpts only if it stands alone as a story.
  • Stories must be previously unpublished. This includes blogs, online, and any print media with a circulation greater than 1000.
  • Word count limit: no minimum, max 10,000.
  • Please do your best to format manuscript to be double-spaced, with 1" margins, and author name and story title in header.

    PROSE CRITIQUES

    • $5 base + 1.5¢/word with a $30 minimum.
    • 10,000 word limit.
    • You may group up to three flash fiction pieces if each is under 1000 words; you will receive one critique covering all pieces.


    POETRY CRITIQUES

    • $5 base + $30 first page, $15 each add'l page.
    • 10 page limit.
    • You may group up to five poems together but each poem must begin on a new page; you will receive one critique covering all pieces.


    INSTRUCTIONS

    1. Submit your work and $5 base fee via this form. 
    2. Receive an emailed invoice via PayPal (see above for rates based on genre), along with your assigned team member's name.
    3. Pay invoice within 48 hours*.
    4. Receive your critique within 10 days of payment.

    *IMPORTANT: If payment is not received within 48 hours, your invoice and critique will be canceled. You will not receive a refund on the base fee. If you need more than 48 hours, email us at critiques@carvezine.com.

    A PayPal account is not required to pay invoice.

    Please fill out your contact information. On the next page, you'll be asked to include a letter and attach a resume and/or CV.

    We are looking for submissions of book reviews, interviews, literary and cultural criticism, profiles, writing advice, lists, recommended reading roundups, and short personal essays on craft or life as a writer. View previous posts here.

    If you wish to submit short fiction, poetry, or creative nonfiction to Carve, please do not submit to this category. Read our guidelines and submit here.

    We accept fully written pieces or pitches. 

    No hard word count requirement, but most should fall in the 300 min.-5,000 max range. 

    Include a proposed title. 

    Include a short bio/byline that you would like to appear alongside the piece. Links to websites and social media pages are fine. 

    Include any other information you feel is relevant, such as what interests you about your topic or why you're uniquely qualified to write about it. 

    Expect a response to your submission within 1-2 weeks. Multiple and simultaneous submissions welcome.

    We accept submissions from anywhere in the world, but posts must be in English. 

    Posts must be previously unpublished. 

    Posts may be shared on social media. If you'd like to be tagged, please let us know of your platform and handle. 

    You are welcome to submit visuals to accompany your work, assuming you have the rights to them.

    REMINDERS:

    • No limit to number of entries but each entry requires a separate entry fee and submission. (One story per fiction submission; one essay per nonfiction submission; one poem per poetry submission.)

    • Please do your best to format prose manuscripts to be double-spaced, with 1" margins. Do not include any author info in the document.
